Happy Birthday, DH!

Happy birthday to my wonderful husband, DH. I don't know what we would do without you. My world wouldn't be whole, that is sure. We love you!

Too many changes too fast for me.

When did someone tell my little girl to grow up? For the last two days it has become readily apparent that I am no longer the mother of a little one but I really am the mother of a toddler perhaps even preschooler.

Why do I say this? Well, for example, the past two nights have involved a significant shift in our bedtime reading. Last night, Miss C sat in her (our) chair alone, legs covered with her blankets (like I normally do when she is in my lap) reading her princess songs book (out loud no less!) and then her animal baby book. She did let me read the second book to her but I read from the floor. After the stories, she put herself in bed. :( Tonight, again, different. Miss C sat on her bed with her Wall-E toy and I read to her there. After her third book (Good night, Good night, Sleepyhead) she laid down and waited for me to cover her up. Growing up way too fast.

Today was our first real weekend day alone with no obligations. Miss C announced during breakfast that it was "Mama, [Miss C] Adventure Day." I call our days out those but hadn't realized how much she caught on to that. She decided that she wanted to paint something for DH. I had mentioned a Paint Your World place downtown (very small town so down town is just a street!) and she got herself clothes and then, once we got our shoes on, I was told we were going to paint for Daddy. Wow.

Another big change, Miss C decided she needs to start using the potty and wearing pull ups. There is something to be said for peer pressure. Most of her little friends in school are in pull ups and working on potty training so apparently must she.

On the plus side, for her anyway, she is still napping for me and at school (I have mentioned that she is in a great class where the teachers notice that she plays with her shoes so they let her take them off for a nap, even though its preferred that they keep them on? And that they put her far away from the music so it doesn't disturb her when she sleeps? I am so pleased with her new class!) and she is still in bed around 630-640ish nightly. She is so busy at school and at home that she is still worn out enough to do both.

I never thought I would long for putting a diaper on my little one. Too many changes way too fast for me but there is little I can do to turn back the hands of time. i only hope she lets me cuddle with her still.

Video Blog!

DH left on Memorial Day. We're doing fine but you all know how tough it is with your loved one gone. Just in case DH gets a chance to check, I am posting a short video from a recent dinner. Please note, she was simply playing and was in no danger of falling!

Family Photos

We got some family photos done (I know, finally!) so I thought I would share one with you here and put the rest here. What do you think?

Miss C turned 20 months old and all she got was a fever

20 months, already?

Yep and for our 20 month day we got, a fever. Lovely. 103. No fun. Funny thing, Miss C was mainly her normal, cheerful, playful self. She snuggled a little more but who would think that would be the only sign (other than, later on, the fever itself). She's doing fine, taking Motrin and sleeping pretty soundly. I just got back from about 15 minutes of snuggling. Miss C woke up and just wanted to snuggle. Poor kiddo.
Well, I started this posting on Monday but didn't get far with it until tonight. Our week has been rough. Miss C has been very healthy so her getting and keeping a fever for more than a day was unexpected and we suffered, that's for sure.

It took 4 days and 3 nights of constant cuddling, sipping on juice and water, sleeping on the couch and sometimes the floor (all of us) and two visits to the doctor but I think we are beyond the worst. Miss C's fever finally broke for more than an hour this afternoon. She still isn't back to her chipper old self, but that will take time. One of the negative aspects of this situation is that we allowed Miss C to sleep outside of her bed. While some folks have done that all along, Miss C hasn't slept in anything but her bed or the cot at school, ever. I mean, she always went upstairs for her naps, always slept in her bed (even her own pack and play when we travel) so this was different. Unfortunately, she liked the different, especially when it means downstairs where we are when she needs sleep.
Well, we had to get her to sleep in her bed tonight. I mean, she wasn't running a fever anymore but she (we all) sorely needs the sleep and we know that she will sleep well in her bed, if we can get her to even lay down in it. That took a lot of doing, a lot of crying and a serious amount of will power. Miss C has discovered that crying gets attention. We are talking to her about not crying just to make noise, especially when she knows the words. I think that will be an on-going battle, but I digress. Tonight after dinner and bath, normal routine, we tried the bed again (last night we caved because she still had a mid-grade fever). Ok, so first I tried, I talked, I asked, I did everything short of close the door behind myself. DH then tried. He even offered to move a different mattress in the room. I tried again. This time I told her she wasn't getting off the bed and I sat at the opening of it. She stood and stared at me like i was the meanest mama ever. We had a stare-off. After about 10 minutes, DH came back in and we told her good night, we love you.

About an hour later (we were terrified to even open the door), DH poked his head in to see if Miss C indeed fell asleep standing up. Ah, success! She was laying down asleep in her bed, for now. Hopefully we won't have to go through this again tomorrow!

Happy Birthday, DH!

Happy Birthday, DH!
Miss C and I are so lucky to have you as daddy and husband.
My love, you are my best friend, my confidant, my love. I don't know what I would do without you.

Sorry no big plans this year (isn't football enough though? :) ). I promise to make it up to you over the next 12 months.

Happy Anniversary DH!

Well, today is 11 years since DH and I took our vows. talk about a change.

In the past 11 years we have done at least 8 deployments, lived in no fewer than 6 states, visited no fewer than 8 counties both for work and pleasure, got a cat and had a baby. Whoa.

As a gift to ourselves we went to dinner, alone. Yes, you heard me correctly, alone.

This is the first time that we went to dinner alone. This is the first time we had a babysitter over at the house. Wow.

I found our sitter from a flyer at work, of all things. She is the daughter of one of the guys I work with, a recent college graduate who is going to teach English in Korea at the end of the summer.

I was worried. Boy, was I worried. I mean, aside from the time she spent with Mrs J and a few visits with the grandparents, Miss C has never had a sitter at night.

When our sitter got here, a half hour before I planned to leave in order to give them time to acclimate, Sammy (our cat, remember) ran over to her like she knew her. She mewed and purred and loved all over her. Once the cat was in awe of her, Miss C decided, heck, she must be alright and walked over to her.

In less than 15 minutes, Miss C got comfortable enough with the sitter, a girl, young lady, whatever, she just met, to let her carry her up and down the stairs during the quick house tour.

I was flabbergasted. It made me think about what it was like when I was baby sitting and how I could get the kids to just glom on me. It made it easier to enjoy our anniversary dinner.

We only spent a couple of hours out but by the time we got home, Miss C had already been in bed an hour (long days walking and all that!). The sitter told us she was incredibly easy and asked us to explain a couple of the signs Miss C uses that aren't on the chart (example, Miss C pats her chest when she wants someone/something to come to her. She also points to her palm when she wants you to give her something. Neither sign is on the chart so we guess she made them up).

What a relief.

Oh, and, we really did enjoy our dinner.

I love you, DH!

Happy father's day!

A quick Happy Father's Day to DH, SNG, LeBon, DH's DOD, Alphagal's DOD, my little brother W (a Dad to be) and all the other fathers and fatherly types out there.

Our weekend consists of DH coming home from another trip and me on eve watches. I get to spend half the day with DH and Miss C then I go off to work and DH gets the rest of the afternoon, dinner, bath and bedtime. It is an interesting time but we all deal with it.

Well, that's about it. Check out the video in the last post, if you haven't already. It was my father's day gift to DH while he was gone!

Another quick update

I know, I know. I should be trying to post more but I am spending my time in other pursuits like Miss C, DH, work, school, you know the drill.

DH is getting ready to go on a trip and Miss C is getting ready to start a new group day care so life is a little hectic. On the plus side, Miss C seems to really like the new place. We've been visiting, kind of like play dates, a couple of times over the past couple of weeks. This way she is used to the place before she starts. She seems to enjoy the classroom (lots of new stuff to investigate) and her classmates (again, lots of new stuff to investigate!). I am sure that come Monday, her first official day, she will do well.

Here's a recent shot from Mrs J's house. As you can see, Miss C is really working on walking. I am sure it will happen sooner rather than later based on these photos.

Hope ya'll are having as much fun as we are!

Becoming sneaky?

I am relaying a story DH told me earlier since I am standing mid-watches and miss my little girl's mornings.

Apparently Miss C is getting sneaky. When she started crawling we fully expected her to venture out and explore more. That was all fine and good and when she got into something, mainly power outlets or other dangerous areas, DH started to make a "zzzt" noise and tell her "no, danger." That worked reasonably well although Miss C would put her little hand right back around the area she got zzzt'd, in her attempts to determine what caused that sound.

This morning, Miss C displayed another facet we hadn't seen, trickery. She was zzzt'd and moved when she was messing with DH's cigar box. Not a big deal, just something not to mess with. Well, according to DH, Miss C took her toy kitten and started tossing it over towards the box. She would toss it, crawl over and hug it, make her purring sound then toss it again, each time getting progressively closer to the coveted box. Eventually, DH caught on and they moved to another room to play in hopes that she would soon forget the box.

I thought it was a cute story. I think I remember Alphagal mentioning E-baby doing something similar with her pacifier but it was at a much later age. I wonder if Miss C is trying to trick us or what.
I mean, look at this little girl, do you think she would try to trick you?

A busy day all around

Today we went to visit the Navy's Child Development center. Let me explain, after Mrs J told me that she was closing down at the end of the summer, DH and I discussed when we should start looking for alternate care. We agreed to move Miss C in July when Mrs J is going home on vacation. I spoke with Mrs J about this and she was fine with it. Well, when we signed up for in home care, we also got on the wait list for the child Development center. Apparently this place is harder to get into than Harvard! We are "Priority 1" because we are dual military and we just got a chance to take a spot after 6 months!
We decided to take the spot (it opens on May 5th) because Miss C does need the socialization with her peers and because Mrs J is closing down. So, today Miss C and I had an adventure and went to meet her classmates and her teachers. She had a great time. I swear little miss thing was introducing herself to everyone, it was so cute! She apparently remembers the group setting from SoCal and is fine with it.
So, I thought that because DH was still here that we would just shift over in May in spite of my being on shift. Oh, I was so wrong!
When DH got home from work today he told me that he will be leaving soon, not quite sure when soon, but sometime in the next few days. He will be back around Miss C's birthday but he has another, albeit shorter trip then. AH, OK, so now what?
I called Mrs J and talked to her. We had discussed this possibility earlier and she is being gracious enough to be willing to help out still. Thank gosh for great people. So, for those interested, here's our plan to make sure that we are using all of our resources.
Once DH leaves, Mrs J will let me bring Miss C over for the eves and mids (on the eves I get her at midnight, poor baby, and on mids I bring her at 10pm, poor baby, and wait until noon the next day to get her so I can get some sleep). Once our spot opens at the Child Development Center (CDC), I will use them for weekday days, but I am paying for all of the services.
Mrs J is nice enough to let me use my 50 hours then charge me the additional even though I will use most of them in the evenings and overnight (oh yea, and weekends). i am really lucky and blessed that she is willing to help me out with this. The reason I will still take Miss C to the CDC is for the school aspect with other kids. I am going to pay regardless.
So, other than that, I learned that in order to advance to the next "class", Miss C will have to be able to walk comfortably, show independent eating (apparently they work on this in her class first) and sit at a little table to eat. Are they trying to make her grow up too fast?
i worry that i am not doing enough then I worry that they want too much!
Alas, on the plus side, I am still home. DH won't be gone the 6 months that most folks are. Mrs J and family are seriously helping save my bacon.
And, one big plus, Miss C is a happy, healthy, well adjusted little girl. Guess that should be the most important, right?

Change of priorities

It used to be that when we had an extra day off or just a weekend together, DH and I would enjoy a sleeping in, go out to breakfast or possibly lunch, wander around, goof off, whatever.

Since having Miss C, all of our priorities have changed. We no longer sleep in. That luxury is not around because we have her on her school schedule where she has to get up at 6 to be able to leave in time to get to Mrs J's so I can get to work on time. Try explaining to an 8 month old that she (meaning you) can sleep in because there is no school that day. Yea, right.

We go on "adventures" now, to the grocery store, to Walmart, occasionally out to lunch. They are adventures because they are all pretty new to Miss C. We don't go occasionally because she doesn't do well, quite the opposite. Occasionally because she wants to be involved so badly that she chooses to stay awake rather than nap and wants to talk and watch people just like grown ups. She is shifting from the baby two am and two pm naps to one in the am and one in the pm. That is, unless she exhausts herself (not entirely uncommon), then she wants a nap either before or after dinner which makes the rest of our evening routine a little more challenging.

Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. I know we have it lucky. Luckier than most. Miss C sleeps like a champ, 11 hours a night, pretty regularly unless she gets woken up by something then, well, you all know how that goes. The teething isn't an issue either. Other than the near constant drooling and snot nose, she is great. No complaining, no fussing.

Its just that I have noticed that our priorities have really shifted.

Last semester I took classes, I was all over school work. Too much, according to DH. This time, with Miss C, I admit I am not working as much as I used to. I am doing as well or better work but I don't try to work on anything until she is down for the night. Its just that my priority is taking care of her.

Work is different too. I would normally jump on travel opportunities and all that. Now, well, I prefer not to. Its harder because DH has to travel and I am not supposed to so I choose not to. More priority shifts.

As I type this, the house is practically silent. There is only the sound of my typing and, if I walk by the laundry room, the occasional sound of the latest load in the washer. I sit with one ear trained towards the door leading to the office because Miss C has finally succumbed to her after noon nap, having been playing for the past few hours.

Its nice but I have to admit it, the sound of my little girl giggling when she chases after the cat is music to my ears!

School, teeth, what a busy week!

Well, school started for me on Wednesday. I am only taking one class this semester because I don't want to do too much or not have enough time to properly devote the time to Miss C. We're only in the first week but we already have a very full syllabus which culminates in a PR campaign concept package which was developed based on research we have to conduct earlier in the semester. Yep, loving life!
Actually, I think I will be ok. I always (ask DH) get this way about school. The main difference this semester is that I don't even look at anything until Miss C is in bed. I have to devote my time to her when she is awake especially when I only get a few of those hours on week days. We've taken to going on "Adventures" on the weekends. Mainly that consists of going to the grocery store or visiting a friend, but it gets Miss C out with one or both of us and she gets to have some fun away from home. She seems to be enjoying it!
Speaking of Miss C, her bottom teeth are finally coming in full. For the past few months we have been going through the agony of having her teeth come up through the gums only to go back down or actually have the gums swell up around them and Miss C have to go through that yet again. On Tuesday she got home from Mrs J's and it just seemed like something was bugging her. While playing with her, she took my finger and stuck it in her mouth and voila! Teeth! I am attaching my attempt to get a photo of the teeth but she is kind of camera shy today. If you check out flickr, you can see some other ones we took recently where she is actually starting to ham the camera!
Ok, other than school and teeth, work is picking up for both myself and DH. Unfortunately, DH has to go on a trip for a couple of weeks soon. He's pretty sure that Miss C will figure out how to go from reverse to drive in her crawling right when he leaves. I am afraid he might be right. She sure seems ready.
That's pretty much it for now. Sorry I haven't been updating as frequently but you know how it goes!
Post a comment every now and then to let me know you all are still reading this, ok?

Merry Christmas!

Sorry I didn't post this on Christmas Day, but we were a little busy.
Let's see, the party at the neighbor's house went well. Everyone had to come over and meet us, but we are sure it was because of Miss C. She was the center of attention and loved watching everyone. She was quiet for the first fifteen minutes then started to play with a cup in my lap. She was just fine so long as no one actually tried to talk to her directly. She even got a very sweet teddy bear from the host and hostess as she was deemed the guest of honor.
I think we will be seeing these folks, the neighbors that is, more frequently than we did in SoCal. It's nice to have nice neighbors that aren't able to look into your backyard from their upstairs!
Miss C had a great time but I expect that she will have even more fun once we get to her Great Grandmother's house this weekend. We think her favorite gift so far was her remote control. It was from our old cable set. DH scrubbed it and boy, I don't think she has let it go more than a couple of minutes at a time. She was exhausted last night and slept well as usual.
As a gift to us, Miss C is now scooting backwards! Talk about a great gift. As I understand it, this is a precursor to crawling. We told her she is a little young to be doing this but she simply stuck out her tongue and gave us a raspberry! She is also saying "da" a lot more now so DH got his own Christmas gift from Miss C. I know she will be saying "ma" in time so I guess I will wait.
I am putting in a couple of cute pictures (go figure!) and then we're off! I have to work today so there are still a few things to take care of. I will try to post again soon.
Until then, hope everyone is having a great time!

Weekend fun

Hey there! Well, we made it through the mid watches so now we start eves on Monday. While I will no longer be at work throughout the night, I will have to miss Miss C's evening routine. On the plus side, DH gets a chance to settle a routine of his own with Miss C, get used to bathing her and all that. They are doing great regardless.

To make up for what i thought was a yucky two weeks of mid watches (those are 11pm to 8 am, roughly, by the way), Miss C and I made Christmas cookies today. Check out this picture. We were trying to frost some sugar cookies!

We did have a good time even though it looks like DH managed to catch Miss C between smiles.

We're getting ready for our winter trip to see DH's grandma. Everyone is so excited, I am not sure what Miss C will make of it but its bound to be memorable. I just wish she was able to see the rest of the family more often. Ah, well, maybe later, right?

That's pretty much it for now. Hope ya'll are having a great December and don't forget to toss me a comment every once in a while, ok?

First watch, well kind of

Well, I went in for my first watch tonight, this afternoon really. It was so hard. I spent the entire morning and an hour or so of the afternoon with Miss C. She was babbling, rolling, playing, all sorts of good stuff. She seems to be going through another growth spurt so she napped a little more frequently than I expected, but eh, no worries.
I went to get her from her last nap and thought, hey, she hasn't seen me yet (I only peeked in the room briefly and saw her playing with her pacifier) why don't I go use the bathroom?
Well, apparently she did see me and she started to cry. I mean cry, really, with tears. My baby never (I mean never, really, ask) cries. My heart broke. I just had to go to the bathroom! I wasn't leaving! Ugh.
Talk about starting out on a crappy note.
So, we hung out really close and ate again before I took her to Mrs J's house. She spent 3 hours there before DH picked her up.
Apparently the rest of the day was a piece of cake for her. She ate lots and played and was out before 7.

As far as my watch went, we did a drill (kind of practice, like a simulation) and that ended early. Then I did normal watch stuff, nothing terribly exciting. I did a little more work then got told to go home, no need to stay, I was "ahead of the curve." Yea me!

I guess I should know not to worry about Miss C right now since she is with DH (for the most part, Mrs J otherwise, really) when I am at work.
Its just that tonight was the first night I wasn't here for her bath or to put her to bed. Wednesday morning I won't be here, I will still be at work and DH has to take Miss C to Mrs J's house (I will pick her up after lunch, once I get a few hours of sleep) so he will be taking care of her morning routine and that makes me sad too. Not that I don't think he'll do a great job, just that I am not here to see her beautiful smile as she welcomes every new day.
I know, maybe I am expecting too much. Miss C probably won't remember that there were a few days every month when Mama wasn't there when she woke up or wasn't there to put her to bed. I just wanted it to be later, ya know?

What are you thankful for?

I am thankful (in no order what so ever)...
- that our cat survived yet another move (her fifth in nine years) relatively intact (she's still a little pissy about it!),
- that our house in SoCal is still standing after the Harris fire,
- that while we may still have our house in SoCal on the market, we are not in over our heads fiscally,
- for our daughter, Miss C, she is the light of my life and brings us so much happiness daily its impossible to imagine life without her,
- for my husband who puts up with me even when I do go a little nutty,
- that although we have been without my father for a decade now, our memories still run strong and we are able to share them with Miss C and her cousins (including stories of Herman!),
- for our families, every joy and every sorrow, we share as a family,
- that Uncle W and Aunt L's little one (due in late June) is on track and doing great,
- that Aunt A and her three children, Miss C's cousins, are thriving and growing so fast,
- that Aunt C and Cousin M, while on the opposite coast are doing well in their own ways,
- that Uncle J calls the day before Thanksgiving even though we understand he might be busy!
- that Uncle D, even though we aren't able to converse right now, is still doing well in his chosen career,
- that Auntie J is willing to give up her vacation to come visit us and help us out,
- that Miss C's Grandma and Grandpa are doing well and will be visiting around the new year,
- for our friends, those willing to read and comment here as well as those who call up just to say hi, stop by for a visit or lend an ear when we have concerns.
- for Alphagal and her DOM who are willing to come visit us when DH is on the road so we don't feel too overwhelmed so early on,
- for Poobou and her family who open their doors to us when we travel so Miss C isn't stuck in a plane and a car for six hours straight
- that Mrs J happily shares her home and her positive outlook with Miss C when DH and I have to work,
- for our new jobs which have allowed us to spend this Thanksgiving together
- for my new job, while i may have to stand silly watches, I won't be called on during this tour of duty to go overseas, to fight the war on terror on that front line,
- for DH's new job that allows us some semblance of normalcy by scheduling his departures in advance, as much as they can,
- for our friends and family, who while they may no longer be with us in body, remain so in spirit

- for the freedom to write and post blogs about what I am thankful for.

What about you? What are you thankful for this year?

Miss C is 5 months old today!

Holy cow! Where did the time fly? Let's just get moving onto the latest, shall we?
1. Miss C is now officially an ankle biter. Yesterday, while sitting in DH's lap, playing, Miss C leaned down and wrapped her chubby little arms around his foot and put her wee little teeth into his ankle! It caused more laughter than anything else, but yes, folks, its official, Miss C is an ankle biter!
2. Miss C loves to play with her toes, her feet, her hands, everything. Check out this new photo of her tasting her toes. Too cute!

3. Miss C has 6 (I kid you not!) teeth coming in, the four bottom front and the 2 top front. The bottom front have broken through but are still quite clear so they are hard to see. The top left one has a point through and the top right is swollen. Poor kid! She drools like a champ though and doesn't complain much. She does use everything she can get her hands on to help her. She even likes the "Super Soothies" pacifier and holder to chew on!
4. Miss C is much better at balancing while sitting up. She sits in her boppy to play. This has in turn led to her sitting up in the bath tub so now we are giving her baths in her little tub but without the back support. Instead, she gets Mommy back support. She likes it this way, her ducky is always at hand!
5. Miss C is more fond of oat meal than rice cereal. This didn't take long to figure out. We started her off on rice cereal and a week or so later decided, what the heck, give oat meal a shot. I kid you not, she loves it!
6. At first glance, Miss C is not fond of green beans (see photo below). This is, however, the first time she tried them and she had recently gotten up from a nap. I think that she will grow to like tons of stuff, but we couldn't stop ourselves from taking this photo. It reminds me of how DH looks when I offer him green beans!

7. Miss C is much more communicative. For example, when she needs something, she leans towards it and gets it. If she can't reach it, she grunts for us to get it for her. When she is hungry, if I am holding her, she will grab my face and suck on my chin. She got her care provider's nose the other day because she "missed a sign" that Miss C was hungry. She will even pat your chest if she thinks that will help!
Well, that's pretty much it for today. Miss C caught a little new care provider bug. Just a little stuffed up, well, more like runny snot, but you know how it is. We've got her leaning just slightly in her crib and it, as usual!, helps keep her clear so she sleeps well. All we have to do now is get over this one hour time shift. It seems to take Miss C a little while to adjust. Its really such a neat process!
