An ode to my BFF - Alphagal
people apart, I think it helped us become better friends
L is for lovely, which is what you are. You are a truly lovely friend.
P is for punny, which anyone who knows you realizes your ability to make puns out of almost
anything!
H is for healthy, which is what you have to be to run triathlons, crazy!
A is for amazing, enough said!
G is for genius, they don't just hand out PhDs to anyone, you know!
A is for always there, you are always a friend, regardless of distance and time, I love you for
that!
L is for leader, you know how to take charge and make things happen!
I can't believe it's been, gasp, shall I even say it, two decades since we first met! I know that my life has been truly enriched since the day we met and I can only imagine what the next couple of decades have in store for us (school, driving, boy friends, prom!)! I hope you have a wonderful birthday, Alphagal!

CONGRATULATIONS, ALPHAGAL AND COMPANY!

Thank you
Miss C just got the cutest gift in the world from them and while we are going to send a thank you card, we agreed that a video of Miss C enjoying her gift might be a nice addition.
Hope ya'll like it too!
PS In case you are curious, the reason Miss C signs penguin by pointing to her nose is because we played with a toy penguin she has (keep in mind, this started months ago) by "bonking" her nose with the penguin's nose. Kids are so darn smart!

Miss C is 15 months old today!
Besides the standard statistics update that you already got (see last entry), Miss C is doing great.Let's see:
1. Gross motor skill development: Miss C is running and now trying to jump! She twirls when she dances (DH showed her how and boy does she love it!). It is also very cute to watch her walking backwards (she does this with an audience, of course!) and dancing while holding on to her Fisher Price Kitchen or the handle to the freezer drawer (and, no, I have no idea where she came up with that one!). She can also climb onto virtually any couch or chair she sees, something we really have to pay attention to since she forgets that she can also fall. We have avoided having her fall off but the chance is always there.
2. Fine motor skill development: Miss C brushes her teeth as well as those of her dolly, frog and us, given the opportunity. She is also very adept at getting her pants on (really surprised me on that one, but she figured that one out and showed us last night). She has almost mastered getting two of her pairs of shoes on (they are simple velcro shoes, the pair we put on her for school most days have a tongue that gets threaded through a holder so they are more of a challenge). She can also put on and take off her bib (another trick I would prefer she hold off on most days!:)).
3. Vocabulary: Talk about expansion! Miss C is putting together coherent thoughts and vocalizing them regularly. For example, when we take her into school, we usually try to carry her in from the car (avoiding the normal am rush of people and cars and all that). Sometimes she is fine with that but more often than not, she tells us "mama, down, walk" and signs it, just in case I missed it. Too cool. She does the same with DH. She can also tell you what practically any animal says (yep, she still uses her cute rbbbt for frogs!) and points out the birds on the lights in both words and signs on the way into school. DH and Miss C have been working on "who lives where?" For example, if you ask her "who lives in the trees?" she will reply "birds" and sign it too. I love that! I am eternally grateful for Alphagal's encouragement about baby sign. We were all for it from the beginning but never truly realized how much Miss C had absorbed until her teachers commented on it!
4. Fun. Miss C loves to go "out" and "play." She collects "flowers" and "walks" in the yard (the quotes represent the words and signs we see all the time!). When she wants to be cute, Miss C will try to trick you by bringing you something only to give it to the other person (when DH and I are sitting next to each other, for example). We went to a friends house for a get together recently and Miss C played that "trick" on countless folks.
Ok, so the only real concerns I have at this stage:
1. Miss C has not taken a bottle at school in about 4 months but still takes an am and pm bottle here. We are working on getting her to take all of her milk from a cup but she tends to drink about 1/2 of what we give her that way and will only drink more if we put it in a bottle. Thoughts? Suggestions?
2. Very recently (read: just the past few days), Miss C has gotten incredibly clingy with me. I mean, DH is home and if I go to the bathroom, Miss C follows me. If she looks up and I am not in her line of sight, she cries and absolutely has to find me. Is this normal? Thoughts? Suggestions?
Ok, so that's the most recent stuff. Sorry I haven't posted as many pictures as before. We are still taking them, I just have recently forgotten to charge my camera battery so I can't upload! Drr!
Hope you all enjoy these updates!

An overdue update and a baby fever story
Earlier last month we decided to pull the house off the market and look for a renter. We looked at the market and recognized that we wouldn't get what we know the house is worth if we kept it on the market in the market's current state. We went through our agent and found a good property manager. He found us a nice family, they might have had their baby by now, and we are now landlords.
Because we are getting a little more than half of our mortgage with the rent (I would love to ask for more rent but because so many people bought when the houses were first built, well, they can ask a lot less than we can for rent), there is a little more breathing room. Once we started to see the rent checks, I talked to DH about getting some housekeeping help. I took a cue from Alphagal on this one.
Those of you with kids understand how hectic life gets with a little one and how difficult it can be to keep up with everything. With me in school and working full time and DH on the road part of the time, I wanted to get some help. We had our first visit yesterday and I am thrilled to know that every couple of weeks we will have someone to come over and scrub our bathtubs and all that. One less thing to stress out about.
Ok, so with yesterday being our first day, we kind of had to vacate for a while. Miss C got a fever (about 102F) on Saturday afternoon and started me worrying. I gave her some Tylenol and gave Alphagal a call since she has more experience with this stuff than I do. She suggested checking Miss C's temp within 4 hours (the general effective time for Tylenol) and if it hasn't dropped to call the doctor. We had a quick dinner (quick because Miss C didn't want much, a clue to me that something was wrong) and decided to check.
Have I mentioned that one of the problems with military medicine is that it isn't like civilian medicine. You can't generally reach your doctor on the weekends and our clinic here isn't open on the weekends or after 11pm during the week. Ok, on with the story.
I checked Miss C's temp and was a bit freaked out to discover it was 103.7F. I looked down at my little angel and said "ok, baby, adventure time." and off we went to the hospital. I gave her another dose of Tylenol on the way out the door, hoping it would help.
We got there and they checked her temp. Yea, it was still a pretty high temp. They did the preliminary stuff and gave Miss C a dose of Motrin while we waited on the doctor. The doctor eventually got there and checked Miss C out. He said she had a cold, what I thought to begin with, and once her temp dropped, sent us home.
Come Monday, Miss C wasn't back to herself but she wasn't running a high fever so I decided to take her to day care while the housekeepers were here. Around noon, I got a phone call. Miss C's temp was 101.5F and we decided to go home. I gave her some more Tylenol and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. I called her doctor again and managed to get an appointment for this morning.
While it seemed that the Tylenol was working, the fever didn't really go away. I tried to give her a bath and she howled. With most kids, this would be kind of normal. Miss C, however, loves her baths (another clue to me). Come 1030pm, Miss C woke up and cried her eyes out. She refused to be comforted. She woke up every half hour (worse than when she was 2 weeks old!) and wouldn't let me lay her down. When she finally did lay down, she rolled to her side and cupped her ear (another clue to me).
At 2am, I finally got her down for the night. She slept pretty well and didn't get up until 8am. Her fever seemed to get better but we were still going to the doctor. When we got there, her fever was gone and the nurses seemed to think I was kind of loony to be there. I love judgemental folks.
The doctor came in and I convinced him to check her ears very closely. Alas, the culprit! She has an ear infection. We apparently caught it pretty early. I got a script for Amoxicillin and Miss C has been getting back to her normal, happy self this afternoon. She is down for a nap and seems to be doing much better than this past weekend.
Sorry this was so long, but I just wanted to pass along the "trust Mommy instinct" message. The doctors and nurses all thought I was kind of out of it because the little girl they saw was pretty happy. They just didn't realize that this wasn't the uberhappy Miss C I am used to. I am grateful that we have been lucky with her health this far. Miss C is almost 1 year old and this is the first time we have been sick like this. I feel for ya'll who've kids have been sick this winter. I knew it was tough but ugh!

Rough morning (a poo story)
Well, I got her fed and back to sleep but then she woke up practically screaming at 330. I ran upstairs, barely awake and dying for sleep, and changed her. I figured that she had a wet butt and all that. When I got there, she was on her tummy, hands and knees really, crying her eyes out. Bad dream? Maybe. Got the diaper changed and found a neat little poo package in there. Ok, that was the issue, no problem. By this time, DH came up to help and sent me back to bed while he got Miss C back to sleep.
We thought all was well. She woke up at her normal 6am wake up time and life was grand until she started to grunt and groan (her normal poo faces and sounds). I grunted with her and then she started to cry and scream. Oh crap! Did I make her cry?!! DH mentioned a little while later that she had done something similar lately and that she really hadn't pooped much... Hmm...
I started to think about all of the discussions Alphagal and Poobou have included me in on with their girls and this potentially potent issue. The crying abated and I thought, ok, time to take some action. Around 9 I decided to help out and used (ugh!) a lubed q-tip. I then put Miss C in her crib and we played peek a boo. DH mentioned that she seems to poo better in there maybe because the mattress is soft so I thought I would give it a shot.
Yep, loads of fun. It took about 10 minutes but then Miss C got red in the face, started bearing down, grunting and crying. It was terrible. I remembered something Poobou wrote and decided to let gravity help. I picked up Miss C and held her to my chest, her head on my shoulder. We then sat in her glider and I let her use my legs to brace her little feet on. She cried and screamed and all I could do was rub her back and tell her we were getting it all out. By the time 3o minutes had elapsed, I knew we were successful. Sometime during all of this, I managed to get her little pants off and unsnap her onesie. Lucky me.
I braced myself for more tears as I laid her down on her changing pad. Low and behold a nearly 6 inch gift awaited me (grown up size and all, poor baby!) and Miss C was exhausted.
So, how was your morning?

Early Holiday Joy
First, a couple of good friends of ours here in the Pacific Northwest had their baby (adorable Leila Marie!) this morning. She is just beautiful! They are all doing great.
In addition, I was finally able to upload a new video of Miss C with her new trick. The best part is at the end of the video, so please give it a minute, ok?
After all of that wonderful news, I got home to see Miss C received an early Christmas present. In our mail box was a neat package from Amazonqueen's DOM. What a wonderful blanket Miss C received! I attached a couple of photos we took today of her enjoying this wonderful gift.
OK, I admit, I had to call Alphagal to confirm the sender as I am not always current on her tia's real names!
Anyway, Alpha tells me that the blanket was Amazonqueen's idea so I have to publically thank both women for such a wonderful, enduring treasure. I know Miss C will enjoy it forever! I would give you loads of hugs if we were in person, but blog hugs will simply have to do until then!
I guess that's pretty much it for today. Thanks for stopping by! Drop a line if you get a chance, ok?

Settling in

Moving day
I let Miss C stay a little later at day care than normal because her teachers (so awesome, by the way) were so sad about today being her last day. When I got there, her main teacher had Miss C in her lap. I think she spent the entire day in that position. Miss C has gone through so many changes since we started day care two months ago. I know its not been a long time, but she really bonded with her teachers. There are a couple of photos in the flickr of Miss C and two of her teachers. We will miss them.
Sammy apparently is doing ok on the drive from the airport to the house. DH and I think she wore herself out. Miss C is already in bed, tired little bug. She knows something is going on and responds when I stress. I really have been trying not to stress but she picks up on my every vibe. Good thing she mellows me out, I suppose. She started to let me sleep through the night (like that turn of phrase? Alphagal used it to explain when the baby is sleeping continuously so the Mommy can get a whole night's sleep). I am afraid that the moving might cause a set back with the sleep but as long as Miss C is doing well, I can deal with whatever sleep I get, or don't get.
Ok, so we get up north on Sunday and our stuff gets delivered on Tuesday. I promise to take and post lots of pictures, including of Miss C in warmer clothing. We are scheduled to visit Poobou when we get there as she is willing to let us hang out for a little while so Miss C can stretch before a two hour (or so!) drive. I can't wait to see her Cate and introduce the girls. Last (and first, for that matter) time we saw them, Cate was a mere 6 weeks old. My, how time has flown!
Well, that's it for now. Wish us a smooth move!

Alphagal, E-baby and DOM departed today
If you want to see more, go to our youtube page (the link is to the right).
E-baby has gotten so big and she is talking and trying to get new words every day. Miss C is learning from her and is now making more raspberries than ever before! They are so cute together. Unfortunately, they are both so young still that they don't really play together, yet! Just throwing in a couple of photos here. Be sure to hop on the flickr page and see more. Alphagal should be uploading some to her flickr too, once they finally get home.
DOM made sure we all ate regularly and well. She is so nice to cook and then clean up to give us more time with the kids. It was a learning experience listening to her tell about Alphagal and her brother. Miss C fell in love with all three! We spent to so much time in awe over the changes we see in both kids. Who would have imagined that by this point both Alphagal and I would be married to two terrific men and have these two wonderful babies? Hmm!
Almost every morning we all took a nice long walk around the neighborhood. Miss C is much more comfortable in her baby bjorn and seemed to love the walks, no matter what time of day they were. She is taking naps better since the visit began, although she is so enthralled with everything that E-baby is more entertaining than normal. The only difference was the day before everyone left, Alphagal and company took a tour of the Zoo. I understand everyone had a great time! Lots of dogs to see (ask Alphagal about that one!).
Its crazy, but I think Miss C went through another growth spurt during the visit because she looks so much different than when everyone got here. I don't know what DH is going to think when he gets home and gets to see Miss C!
Well, we all had a great time and can't wait for the next visit. The house up north is getting close to completion and we are getting close to moving. Time is starting to get short for us here in Southern California.
Hope ya'll get a chance to check out the videos and new photos. Let us hear from you on occasion, ok?
